When planting rose seeds from various rose bush hips, it is recommended to use a separate tray for each different group of seeds and label the trays with the corresponding rose bush's name and planting date. The rose bush seeds should be planted approximately ¼ inch deep in a seed-planting mix in seedling trays or your own planting trays. The trays need not be more than 3 to 4 inches deep for this purpose.

The planting mix should be very moist but not soaking wet. Seal each tray or container in a plastic bag and place them in the refrigerator for 10 to 12 weeks. This cold stratification process mimics the natural conditions that rose seeds experience when they fall to the ground and are exposed to cold winter temperatures before germinating in the spring.

After the 10-12 week refrigeration period, remove the trays from the fridge and place them in a warm, sunny location. The seeds should begin to germinate within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings have their first set of true leaves, they can be transplanted into individual containers filled with a well-draining potting mix.

Gradually acclimate the young rose plants to outdoor conditions by placing them in a sheltered location for a few hours each day, slowly increasing their sun exposure over the course of 1-2 weeks. This "hardening off" process helps the delicate seedlings transition from the protected indoor environment to the harsher outdoor conditions.

When the rose plants are 6-8 inches tall and the weather has consistently warmed, they can be planted in their permanent outdoor location. Choose a spot that receives full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day) and has well-draining soil. Amend the planting area with compost or other organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility.

Carefully remove the rose plant from its container, taking care not to damage the roots. Dig a hole that is slightly larger than the root ball and place the plant in the hole. Fill in around the sides with the original soil, tamping it down gently to remove air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly after planting.

Proper care and attention during the seed starting and transplanting process will give your rose bushes the best chance of thriving and producing an abundance of beautiful blooms for years to come.
